Causal Networks and Nonmonotonic Temporal Reasoning

چکیده
We show that the theory of causation that makes use of causal networks is intimately related to nonmonotonic temporal reasoning. Applying the theory of causal networks in a logical context yields a new approach to nonmonotonic temporal reasoning that can be proven to be a generalization and/or correction of many existing ones, and that provides new insights on the old question on how, and whether at all, causation may be defined in logical terms.

Causation and Nonmonotonic Temporal Reasoning
We introduce a new approach to reasoning about action and change using nonmonotonic logic. The approach is arrived at by applying Pearl's theory of causal networks to logical formalizations of temporal reasoning domains. It comes in two versions: version S0 that works for logical theories in which causal knowledge is represented explicitly, and version I0 that works for logical theories in whic...

We introduce a new approach to reasoning about action and change using nonmonotonic logic. The approach is arrived at by applying Pearl's theory of causal networks to logical formalizations of temporal reasoning domains. It handles complicated reasoning domains involving concurrent actions, actions with nondeterministic eects, preconditions over several points in time, ramication/qualication co...
متن کاملA Practical Theory of Nonmonotonic Temporal Modelling
This paper sets out a framework for modelling causal or predictive systems, and is concerned with bridging the gap between the theory and practice of nonmonotonic temporal reasoning. The central result is a nonmonotonic reasoning methodology which subsumes Shoham's chronological ignorance (CI) formalism for causal theories. The new formalism uses an extension of Re-iter's default logic and, unl...
متن کاملCausal Deontic Logic
In this paper we introduce a descriptive temporal deontic logic based on causal theories. The underlying nonmonotonic temporal logic has two distinctive properties. First, it distinguishes between observations and interventions, which among others is used to distinguish between the existence and creation of deontic states such as obligations, permissions and prohibitions. Second, its explicit c...
متن کاملSituated Nonmonotonic Temporal Reasoning with BABY-SIT
After a review of situation theory and previous attempts at ‘computational’ situation theory, we present a new programming environment, BABY-SIT, which is based on situation theory. We then demonstrate how problems requiring formal temporal reasoning can be solved in this framework. Specifically, the Yale Shooting Problem, which is commonly regarded as a canonical problem for nonmonotonic tempo...
